Nothing beats bones.

Ja,bot of gemalen bot blijft natuurlijk ideaal.,

Ground eggshell can be used as a calcium supplement. Rinse eggshells and dry them on a counter overnight, or in the oven, then grind them in a clean coffee grinder. One large eggshell provides one teaspoon of ground eggshell, which contains 2,000 mg of calcium, so add ½ teaspoon ground eggshell per pound of food fed. Don’t use eggshells that haven’t been ground to powder, as they may not be absorbed as well.
~~
the following information on calculating how much calcium to add from various sources is derived from the kidney diet pages of Mary Strauss's excellent Dogaware website:
* One large eggshell makes about a teaspoon of ground eggshell, which contains about 5500 mg of straight calcium carbonate. 5500 mg of straight calcium carbonate contains 2200 mg elemental calcium. To prepare dried eggshells, you can leave eggshells to air-dry for several days, then grind them in a coffee grinder. They have to be very dry and finely ground to yield the amounts specified here. If they are not finley ground, they come out exactly as they went in, which does your dog no good at all.
- When feeding a homemade diet with no other calcium included, add 1000 to 1500 mg (1 to 1.5 grams) elemental calcium per pound of food. This amount of elemental calcium would be supplied by 2,750 to 4,000 mg of straight calcium carbonate, such as found in Tums (do not use antacids that also include magnesium, such as Mylanta; Tums is OK). This amount can also be providied by using 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon of finely ground eggshells, which would supply 1,000 to 1,500 mg elemental calcium.
- If using calcium citrate, you will need to use more (around 5000 to 8000 mg calcium citrate per pound of food), since calcium citrate contains only about half as much elemental calcium as calcium carbonate does.

Eggshell powder, this is the cheapest route because you can make the supplement yourself from eggshelss which are very high in calcium carbonate.
Here's how to make eggshell powder Wash the eggshells right after cracking and let them dry until you have accumulated a dozen or so.(Each whole eggshell makes abouth a teaspoon op powder, which equals about 1800 mg of calcium)
Than bake at med.heat for about 10 min,(this removes the mineral coating sometimes added to keep the eggs from drying out) it also makes the shels dry and brittle enough to gind to a fine powder with nut and seed grinder, belender or mortar and pestle.Grind well enogh that there are no sharp pieces.

Calcium must be present in the diet to balance with the phosphorus. Phosphorus is found in most foods and is often in over abundance in the diet. To balance this in home cooked diets or raw diets without bones, add calcium to the diet at 900 mg per pound of food served. This can be done with either supplements such as calcium carbonate or powdered egg shell. Do not add calcium to commercial dog foods, as these already have calcium added.
