"Carbohydrates and pregnancy:
Modern research tells us that she has a special need for carbohydrates towards the end of pregnancy. What is the rational for this?
First, let me say that the requirement for a bitch to be fed with extra starchy foods towards the end of the pregnancy is rarely a problem in bitches fed the BARF diet.
Mostly this related to the smaller breeds. Bitches who have not been fed a barf diet, but have enduring a mostly meat diet all their lives. A high protein diet. These bitches, particularly Chihuahuas, can suffer from hypoglecaemia (low blood sugar) and give birth to a fewer live pups.
Suitable forms of complex carbohydrates in this case include cooked brown rice, whole grain bread, boiled whole potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, etc. or rolled oats soaked in either milk or water. These will probably form about 20% of the overall diet during the last two or three weeks of pregnancy".
