-Starch and fiber in diets potentially stimulate formation of struvite crystals. Hence, reducing dietary carbohydrate is desirable to prevent struvite urolith formation. In addition, a net loss of body calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium during feeding of the fiber diet suggests that dietary inclusion of insoluble fiber could increase macromineral requirements of cats (Evaluation of effects of dietary carbohydrate on formation of struvite crystals in urine and macromineral balance in clinically normal cats. Am J Vet Res. 2004 Feb;65(2):138-42).
-Our results indicate that compared with dietary supplementation with NH4Cl (zit ook in Hill's s/d, enz.), the high-protein diet is preferable as a urine acidifier for the prevention of struvite crystal formation in clinically normal cats (Effects of a high-protein diet versus dietary supplementation with ammonium chloride on struvite crystal formation in urine of clinically normal cats. Am J Vet Res. 2003 Aug;64(8):1059-64).
-High-protein diets have potential ability to increase solubility of struvite crystals (Effects of a high-protein diet on mineral metabolism and struvite activity product in clinically normal cats.
-Recent observations suggest that recurrence rates of signs in cats classified as having idiopathic lower urinary tract disease may be more than halved if affected animals are maintained on high, rather than low moisture content diets (The effect of diet on lower urinary tract diseases in cats. J Nutr. 1998 Dec;128(12 Suppl):2753S-2757S).
-Compared with the lowest contents, diets with the highest moisture or protein contents and with moderate magnesium, phosphorus, or calcium contents were associated with decreased risk of CaOx urolith formation. On the other hand, diets with the highest fat content were associated with decreased risk of MAP urolith formation (Association between dietary factors and calcium oxalate and magnesium ammonium phosphate urolithiasis in cats. J Am Vet Med Assoc. 2001 Nov 1;219(9):1228-37).
Het leuke is dat in 1987 dit al bekend was (Feline struvite urolithiasis: factors affecting urine pH may be more important than magnesium levels in food. Vet Rec. 1987 Sep 5;121(10):227-30).
-Urolithiasis has long been recognized as a cause of irritative voiding in cats. Before the late 1980s, sterile struvite was the most common urolith; today, however, 40% of feline uroliths are of calcium oxalate. This change may be partly attributable to the change to urine-acidifying, magnesium-restricted diets that were introduced to reduce the formation of struvite. As in humans, water is crucial in the prevention and treatment of feline stones (Calcium oxalate urolithiasis in cats. J Endourol. 1999 Nov;13(9):659-63).
-Meat meal was superior to CGM as a protein source in dry foods formulated for cats, because dry-matter digestibility and N utilization were higher for the MM diet. In addition, net loss of body calcium and magnesium for the CGM diet suggests that mineral requirements increase when CGM is used as a protein source (Comparison of corn gluten meal (CGM) and meat meal (MM) as a protein source in dry foods formulated for cats.
) .
