I want you to imagine yourself eating the same meal every day, twice a day, for the rest of your life. Do you see yourself becoming bored of the food? How about not feeling the best because you are getting the same exact nutrients every day with no variety? Now think about your dog for a second-- are you rotating his food enough? Or is he getting the same protein every day?
.
First off, what makes rotational feeding so important? Different proteins feature different nutrients, and your dog may be deficient if he’s eating the same protein every day. By switching it up, your dog is more likely to get all of the nutrients he needs. You may also notice that your pup tends to be a bit picky. It MAY be because he’s bored of the same food!
.
But what about digestive issues? You’ve probably heard that changing a dog’s diet can lead to upset stomach— vomiting, loose stool and gas. Sure, in some cases, this is true. But when you introduce a rotational feeding schedule properly, there should be little to no GI upset. If your dog has been on the same protein for awhile, of course you won’t want to jump right into the next protein right away— be sure to transition slowly!
.
Slowly increase the new protein as you decrease the old, this should take around a week, but every dog is different and sometimes it takes a bit longer.
.
By introducing multiple proteins, you are keeping your dogs intestinal system strong, improve nutrient absorption and help with your dog’s overall well-being.
.
For kibble feeders or commercial raw feeders, switch up the brand, too! Even if you are switching up proteins, almost all brands stick to the same ingredients in different formulas and only switch the protein. For example, if you are eating a salad and just switch the meat you are adding to the salad, you are still eating the same ingredients in the salad. Different brands offer different ingredients which means different nutrients!
.
Don’t forget to incorporate “fun” and “exotic” proteins too when possible! Elk, rabbit, pheasant are a few exotic proteins that you can try feeding your pup! #protein #healthydog
