Causes of PancreatitisObesity: Many dogs with pancreatitis are overweight.
Dogs also are more likely to develop pancreatitis after eating a meal with a high fat content, especially fatty table scraps. Therefore, dietary fat intake and the nutritional status of the animal are important factors in this disease.

What are the contributing factors?Obesity
Another contributing factor to pancreatitis is obesity, which is a problem all of its own. There seems to be a direct correlation between overweight animals and the incidence of pancreatitis.
Dogs fed a predominantly fat rich diet tend to be more predisposed to pancreatitis and that obviously explains their obesity problem. Usually overweight, elderly, couch potato dogs who are fed Sunday BBQ leftovers, which are normally always high in fat seem to be affected. Not to say that nutrition is the only factor but it seems to show a definite correlation in susceptible animals.

Cause:The cause of pancreatitis in dogs and cats and humans remains unclear. However, there are certain things that we know that are associated with the disease. The first is diet. In humans dogs and cats it appears
that diets too rich in fat increases the risk of this disease as does obesity and a sluggish life style. There is also an apparent hereditary predisposition to pancreatitis in the miniature schnauzer due to high levels of lipoproteins in their blood stream. Dachshunds, yorkies, silkies, and possibly a few other miniature breeds are also quite susceptible. The disease occurs usually in middle aged to older dogs, and overweight dogs are at a higher risk. It seems to affect females and males equally.
